lost my main pass to ubuntu have not been able to update

I lost my main password due to severe head injuries years ago. I have not been able to upgrade due to this please help

You should just re download Ubuntu with a newer ISO and save your files

With the procedure in http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword you can set a new password on your Ubuntu user account.
