just upgraded to intrepid alpha 5, I can't login to the gnome desktop

Asked by leo

Upgraded from hardy (and the hardy was also upgraded from gusty)
After login, the windows hung with the yellow background, no activity at all.
I can login with ssh from anther computer, but I can't use a local terminal (ctrl+alt+F1) .

Any Ideas?
Can I roll back to Hardy?

Thanks,
Leo

When you reach your login window, do you see a little icon bottom left of the screen?
If yes, try to use it to open a failsafe session.

If this works, you can type:
sudo apt-get install xfce4
then give your password when prompted.

Type "exit" to get out

Use the session switch again and choose xfce4.
Tell us if you arrive into a usable xfce4 session.

Alternatively, from the fail safe session try typing:
startx
Tell us what this says or does

xinit
Tell us what this says or does

Goog luck

Hi Mariane,

Thanks for your answer.
Fail safe doesn't work, I have to ssh from another computer.

But the good news is that XFCE4 works fine, very fast actually.

Now, what should I do? Stay with XFC4? Can i go back to gnome?

Thanks a lot, ubuntu is the MOST!!!!!
Keep with the good work!!!!
