What changes are lost?

Any changes I make to my desktop are never lost.

Yes. Version 8.04 is a long term support (LTS) release and is therefore considered to be very stable. There was an update released not to long ago so it's now 8.04.1 but even if you install the original it will want to run all the updates so in the end it's the same. As for bugs, ALL software has bugs and is under continual development and improvement. when a version of Ubuntu is released they are saying that there shouldn't be any major issues and even a great number of minor issues have been solved. Once you install you will continue to get updates for things as they are fixed or improved.

As for the issues you describe there is almost certainly an explanation but we would need more info in order to help. I would suggest opening up one ticket for each issue and providing as much information as you can.

Did you actually install Ubuntu, or are you just running from the LiveCD? The LiveCD is designed for demoing Ubuntu and changes made between reboots are not kept. You actually need to install Ubuntu for your changes to be saved.

Can you help with this problem?
