usb hardy live usbcreator

Asked by John Rose

On Hardy, I tried the www.pendrivelinux.com's method to create a USB Ubuntu Persistent Install. It didn't work: if I remember correctly there is a bug concerning casper-rw and initrd.gz. So I tried to use Live USB Creator, using the Community Ubuntu documentation on Installation FromUSBStick. It hung so I looked around and found that it doesn't work on Hardy as stated in the wiki LiveUsbPendrivePersistent documentation.

However, when I plug in a memory stick, the icon doesn't appear on the desktop nor does a Nautilus window open for it. There is no entry in /media or /mnt. /etc/mtab doesn't show an entry for sdb1. lsusb shows the stick. gparted shows the single FAT32 partition. dmesg shows:
[ 168.514942] usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage
[ 168.515569] usb-storage: device found at 2
[ 168.515572] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
[ 389.374076] usb-storage: device scan complete
[ 654.686289] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 2

Loading a cd in the CD/dvd drive no longer shows an icon or the cd's contents.

Any ideas please?

I found a Ubuntu forum which had the same problem for a different reason. Solution is to run gconf-editor (in Terminal) and select apps followed by nautilus. Selecting preferences allows checking of media_automount & media_automount: these make the memory stick & cd automount and nautilus shows their directories. Selecting desktop & checking volumes_visible results in the memory stick & cd/dvd icons being displayed on the desktop.

PS this problem was caused by trying to run LIve USB System Creator from a working Ubuntu Hardy system rather than booting up from the Ubuntu Hardy Live CD.
