Help!! Ubuntu 8.04 is Slow - Docs & PDFs Scroll S-L-O-W !!!

Asked by taurus

I really need to speed up my ubuntu 8.04. Seriously, guys. When I open up my pdf reader or openoffice writer, the scrolling is embarassingly slow. Just to let you know, I'm running a gateway laptop at 1.4 CPU and 1.5 Gigs of ram. I got XP as guest on the same computer and it's lightning fast - I have noe problem with scrolling docs and pdfs on openoffice writer and pdf reader as fast as I want it to.

Please guys, I really need to speed this system up to the max.

bhavani, I think this issue has something to do with my xserver. I got to peroperly reconfigure my xserver since it is suggested that I'm running generic drivers and not those specific to my video card. How do I reconfigure my xserver properly?

To reconfigure X server:

1. Boot normally; when you reach the login screen, press F1.
2. Type your user/password.
3. Type:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

4. Follow the instructions.

draeklae, thanks so much for your answer. I got 2 questions:

1) Can you walk me through the process or can you provide a guide to help me reconfigure the xserver?

2) Also, do you think I need to install drivers specific to my video card?

Thanks.

1) There is not too much into it. Just like I said before:

1. At the login screen, where you type your username/password, press F1. A screen terminal-like will appear, asking your username.

2. Type your username and then your password, as requested.

3. You should now see a command line:

(your username)@(your computer)~

4. Type:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Sudo will ask your password; that's needed in order to perform root (administrator) operations.

5. Just follow the instructions on the screen. It will ask several things, such as your keyboard layout. Just answer accordingly.

2) It depends on your video card. Generally, if you have a nVidia or an ATI card, you need drivers to display visual effects. Ubuntu generally asks you for your consent to install them. Otherwise, there's generally an icon regarding system drivers on the system tray. You can also access the drivers' options from the System menu, on the upper panel, on the left. If you don't have a nVidia or ATI card, e.g. you have an Intel video card, you won't need to install anything, unless Ubuntu asks you to do it.

Can you help with this problem?
