system freeze on Toshiba Tecra M9

Asked by vgyo

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my Toshiba laptop . Unfortunately, the screen freezes a few minutes

the freezing occur when the Nvidia driver ( for NVIDIA Quadro NVS 130M 128MBs) is disabled and I use the Fn + F6 to dim the screen; a few minutes after the system freezes. If i,m required to enter the sudo password the screen darkens a bit until the password is entered , a minute later the system freezes completely.

If I enable the driver , there is no system freezing but then none of the Fn + F1 through F12 work (Icannot dim the screen--it stays all time at max. intensity ! ,or lock the touchpad or the wireless, etc)

If anyone can help...it would be deeply appreciated

Hi,

Please try the following workaround:

http://linuxhappy.wordpress.com/2007/12/17/brightness-on-toshiba-tecra-a9-using-restricted-drivers-on-ubuntu/

Especially the comment/response nr. 6 on that webpage is interesting.

See the following links for more help and info:

http://tuxmobil.org/toshiba.html
http://fnfx.sourceforge.net/

"FnFX enables owners of Toshiba laptops to change the LCD brightness, control, the internal fan and use the special keys on their keyboard (Fn-x combinations, hot-keys)."

Regards,

Mark
