Cannot complete setup, error message from X: "no screens found"

Asked by Greg

I tried installing from the beta CD but the installation can't start X.

I get the following error message: "no screens found". Tried both standard and safe graphics mode. Doesn't get anywhere past the first progress bar and ubuntu logo.

I found some thread where using "ctr+shift+f4" to get to a terminal and installing xorg-driver-fglrx was recommended but after switching to a terminal I could not type anything there.

Specs:
HP nc6400
ATI X1300 mobility card.

See the following bug report:-

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/87244

You can switch to a terminal (CTRL+ALT+F1) and use the vesa driver:-

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

When you have followed that through:-

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

Hi Alan,

I tried you suggestion but could not get to a terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1.

I get to a screen showing the "X server is now disabled. Restart GDM when..." with the Ok button and a cursor blinking at the bottom. However, I cannot type anything at that screen.

There are multple virtual terminals you can get to with CTRL+ALT+F2 through F6. Try one of them, they should be blank.

If your ultimate goal is to install rather than run the Live CD then i would recommend using the Alternate CD rather than the Live one. It has a much higher success rate for installs on hardware that has issues with video drivers.

Can you help with this problem?
