flicker on projector from UBUNTU laptop

Asked by tosh

Hi -- I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Toshiba Satellite - can't get it to display on a external projector or on a second screen without flickering. Flickering is bad enough to make navigation all but impossible. Current resolution on laptop is 1280x800, I tried changing resolutions and it doesn't effect flickering. I have read through the other posts on this problem on others computers, tried adding in the code of last two lines in Monitor section below and it has not helped.

I have to boot with the external projector connected or it is not detected...no normal use of function key.

Here is the relevant section of my xorg.conf file:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller"
        Driver "intel"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Generic Monitor"
        Option "DPMS"
        Option "MonitorLayout" "CRT,LFP"
        Option "Clone" "true"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller"
        Monitor "Generic Monitor"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Modes "1280x800"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Thank you for your your help.

The plot gets a little thicker. If I choose to switch users - I can log on as a random user I just created and then the projector works find BUT the laptop screen starts having the same flicker problem. What is going on? I am not restarting in between.

I am guessing it is a refresh rate issue...

PrivateVoid -- You could be correct although I don't know how to do it -- I have cycled through all the resolution settings - each with a different V and H range -- some of them are worse than others (e.g. screen unreadable - complete psychedelic effect) - the best I can get is a small vibration. It is good enough to read the screen - but definitely irritating and not really appropriate for giving presentations.

I have found other forums calling it a "shimmer" or a "vibration" and no one really has a good solution. This is with the setting for the computer of Modes "1280x800" for widescreen. I am beginning to be concerned that it has something to do with the widescreen/normal screen...although with windows I never had this problem.

If Ubuntu can not do presentations - I will have to convert back to Microsoft - which is really not want I want -- please advise.

I used to have the same issue on Microsoft with certain projectors... so I am not sure your problem is with the OS. Do you have a Windows based laptop to test the projector with?

You might need to setup a mult-screen display -- it looks as though you are getting a single display at 1280x800 which is a wide format and likely not supported on the projector... what video card do you have?

I am sure it is my computer. To test it when I don't have the projector - I tried plugging my laptop into a simple flat panel monitor. I get the same jitteryness -- maybe even a bit worse than with the projector.

    * Graphics Processor / Vendor Intel GMA 950
    * Video Memory Dynamic Video Memory Technology 3.0
    * Max Allocated RAM Size 128 MB

Thanks for you help.

That does indeed make it sound like an issue that a multiple monitor setup would help resolve. It sounds like both screens are trying to use the same resolution -- the projector looks bad at the native LCD panel resolution and the LCD panel looks bad when the projector looks good. To fix this you will want to run both monitors at different resolutions... the bad thing is that Google searched have just turned up with people making the same complaint as you about the issue.

This may not be related but I hooked up a SOYO 24" monitor to my HP laptop and experienced a flicker/shimmer condition on the external monitor. The laptop monitor was not affected. After returning the SOYO for service they reported that it was fine.Upon further investigation and search on the internet I discovered if I up plugged my power supply the flicker/shimmer condition went away. Bottom line is the monitor cable that came with the monitor was inadequate for a 24" display. I bought a coaxial triple sheilded cable (it is twice as hefty as the original one from SOYO) designed for 19" and up monitors and no more problems.
