Skype installation

Asked by Paul Hartzman

I downloaded and installed Skype using the gdebi installer. It installed without any errors. The icon shows up in the start menu. However, when I click on the Skype icon to start the program, the cursor will bounce indicating the program is starting. But the program never appears on the screen. Is there something I am missing that prevents Skype from starting? I also tried uninstalling Skype, and then tried installing it from a terminal window using the sudo apt-get install skype. But it comes up with a message that the package is unavailable.

Thank you,
Paul Hartzman

Try running it from a terminal and see what is output. If there are errors reported paste them here. To run from a terminal open one (apps-accessories) and type skype and press enter. At least I think just "skype" should work. I don't have it on the computer I'm using at the moment to double check.

Another option to explore would be to install from the medibuntu repository. I found that work to well. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto for more info on doing that.

Hi Jim,
Thank you for your fast reply. I finally got Skype to work an hour after I wrote the question. I'm not sure why, but the problem got resolved after I was able to install CNR. The trouble I had with CNR was four library files that were missing. The files were "curl", "dpkg-dev", "libdb4.4", and libqtgui4_4. Once I had CNR installed, it did 154 updates. Once all the upgrades were completed, Skpe ran and setup as I expected.

Another method is to add the medibuntu repository http://www.medibuntu.org/ it have a lot of packages.

Here the applications ready for Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy: http://packages.medibuntu.org/hardy/index.html

Hello marcobra,

I had already done what you suggested.  My problem was that Skype installed without a problem.  It simply wouldn't load when I clicked on the icon.  I have resolved the problem, but in a very strange way.  I was also having a problem installing CNR.  I found out that I was missing three libraries.  Once I got those libraries, CNR installed.  Once CNR was installed, it did 154 updates.  When the updates were finished, skype loaded as I expected.  I don't know why CNR made a difference, but everything is working now.  However, I do appreaciate your response.

Thank you,
Paul Hartzman
