I have a problem using texmate for chess editing...

Asked by JulioSSBuenoF

Texmate (installed via synaptic from texmf-texlive texlive-latex-extra package) invokes version 1.4-a of "skak" package but version 1.3 is distributed...

Any suggestion? sould I manually insert new skak package? where?

Thanks

You can find the original 1.4 fonts at this site:

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/chess/skak/

Unfortunately neither ubuntu nor debian have packages updated to this version.
If you are unable to install from the given site, you can raise a bug report asking for the ubuntu package to be updated.

To manually install the fonts, you should:

Copy all latex files in the original doc directory (fonts/skak/doc/*.tex )
-> to your /usr/share/doc/tex-skak/examples directory

Copy all fonts files in the original mf directory (fonts/skak/mf/*)
-> to your /usr/share/texmf/fonts/source/public/skak directory

Copy all inputs files in the original tex directory (fonts/skak/tex/*)
 -> to your /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/skak directory

Copy the original fonts/skak/special.map file
-> to your /usr/share/texmf/fontname directory as skak.map

Update the database with the texhash command.

Note that in this version there is a new file: fonts/skak/syntax/syntax.tex
I have no idea what it is about.

You can use the files in fonts/skak/test to test the installation.

Thank you Cesare,

I followed as well as I could,with a sligth change on directories to fit texmf-texlive directory structure:

> Copy all latex files in the original doc directory
> (fonts/skak/doc/*.tex )
> -> to your /usr/share/doc/tex-skak/examples directory

OK, in here I used /usr/share/doc/texlive-games/latex/skak/

> Copy all fonts files in the original mf directory (fonts/skak/mf/*)
> -> to your /usr/share/texmf/fonts/source/public/skak directory

In here I've tryed /usr/share/texmf-texlive/fonts/source/public/skak

> Copy all inputs files in the original tex directory (fonts/skak/tex/*)
> -> to your /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/skak directory

I've created /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/generic/skak
(well,skak was not there)

> Copy the original fonts/skak/special.map file
> -> to your /usr/share/texmf/fontname directory as skak.map

In my case, /usr/share/texmf-texlive/fonts/map/fontname

> Update the database with the texhash command.

I did it. But "latex test1.tex" got the diagrams wrong (like bad box or bad font size...)... I've tryed from texmate and it still get the wrong skak version (1.3)!
Should I create these exact directories you suggested and retry?

Did you rename special.map as skak.map?
The install instructions I gave you were coming from the tex-skak (1.2-6) package and were assuming you were using texmf. I can see that with texmf-texlive there is a somewhat different directory structure.
Perhaps you will be better off using texlive-font-utils?

Also have a look at this page:

http://tug.org/tex-live/doc/texlive-en/live.html#x1-160003.3

There are some good tips (for instance have a look at the "Installing individual packages to disk"section).

Hope any of this can be of help.

Hi Cesare,

I could not fix it. Texmate keeps asking for skak 1.4a and saying that 1.3 is installed instead. I suppose the directory I've created (generic) is the problem. I think it is better to ask people from Ubuntu 7.04 release to pack skak 1.4a and check if it is working with texmate in texlive-games package installation.

I really appreciate your attention and will try to read a bit more to fill some of my many lacks of understanding on these texmf thing :-)

I opened a ticket (bug #99840) in Launchpad.
I'm sorry I could not offer a better help.

Hy Cesare, someone said he had fixed the dependencies, but I still
have not checked it out.

No, they are not fixed yet, and the debian maintainer doesn't think he will fix them any time soon.
Please check out the bug report for details.
