Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD won't boot on new macbook.

Asked by Faldwin

I downloaded and burned the live CD, and then shut down my macbook. I have the latest model of macbook with the Intel processor, not PPC. When I started it up I held C to boot from the disc. A black screen came up with a flashing white underscore in the upper left corner. Now it is completely stuck there. Typing does nothing, pressing the power button does nothing. Pressing the eject button on the keyboard does nothing. My machine is entirely useless now. Did I do something wrong? How do I get my computer back. I would like to be able to run Ubuntu off the CD, but my priority is getting a functional computer with all my files, whether it is running OSX or Ubuntu.

Okay, I let the battery run down, so it would shut down, so OSX is back. I think I may have figured out why I had a problem though. The name of the .iso that I burned to a disc ends in (2) because it is the second copy that I downloaded. The first one was supposed to be the installer, not the live cd, but they have the same filename, so I'm not really so sure. This is the filename: ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

If I re burn the file with the original filename will it work this time?

the filename doesnt matter... an .iso (ISO-9660) is just a copy of the "partition" on the CD saved as a file instead of a disc.

Right, the file name doesn't matter. Just make sure you burn it as an iso and not just a data file. I believe a mac can do this properly without additional software. Windows can't. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto for basic info on burning an iso.

For info on installing on a mac see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook_Santa_Rosa. Running off a live CD is not recommeded as a long term solution. It's much too slow and saving changes is harder. Use the live CD to see if you and your computer like Ubuntu. If so, install. The rEFIt boot loader makes using OSX and Ubuntu easy.

Maybe I did something else different then. because I re-burned the file with the original name, and it worked. In any case problem solved.
