NEW Install -- Error: unable to mount root fs

Intel Desktop Board D915GAG / D915PSY with Intel 3.0Ghz CPU - only 3Gbs RAM and 1Tb HD.
Attempting to boot from Ubuntu 16.04 CD and get the following error:

New install of Ubuntu 16.4 using the disk from the book...... 1st experience ever with Ubuntu. Can anyone assist me on getting past this?

I forgot to mention that the HD that Ubutu will be installing to has already a partition with WinXP Pro. Hoping to get prompted to reformat HD.

You could boot to Ubuntu live CD desktop and run a full fsck on the file systems. Make sure they are healthy

Thanks Andrew, but I can't even get to the Ubuntu screen that allows me to either install or run live. Motherboard logo comes up and immediate get the screen error above. Bad disk perhaps? I'll try it on another desktop when i get home today.
