Nvidia 8600 GT - Ubuntu 8.04 HELP!!

Ok, I am going crazy trying to install the Newest Nvidia drivers for the 8600 GT.
I have installed, removed and re-installed these drivers about a hundred different ways and still cannot get the system to boot up after the startup screen.

I have used Envy to solve this.... nothing.
I have used the Synaptic drivers... nothing.

I got them to work when I was using Fedora 9 the other day, but they will not in Ubuntu.

Please if someone can help me in a step by step fashion I'd be truely greatful.
I am quite the Newbie when it comes to Linux.
