Installing Ubuntu 6.06, 6.10 or Feisty on Medion MD 8818 ML not working. No Hardware recognition. Fake Raid problem?

Asked by Peer Wüschner

Hi everybody,
I bought the new (Aldi) PC Medion MD 8818 ML last december. Windows XP preinstalled, and I don't like it, but still have to use it for professional reasons. But No Way to install Ubuntu, Redhat, Suse or whatever Linux, because Harddisks are not found - so I can't format them. Is this a virtual SATA problem, as somebody says? How to fix it? What can I do?
And please, if giving me any advice regarding BIOS, please tell me, how to get into Bios and what to do exactly ... I am more a simple user than a programmer ...
But I have some prior experience regarding Ubuntu 6.06, as I installed and configured it and worked with it successfully on another PC (by Gericom).
I even succeeded there in getting my usb-TV Card to work ...
But now? I am clueless and the hints in the web regarding my problem didn't really help a bit.

Hello txwikinger,
I tried your advice and got this output:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

ok.. the kernel recognises your SATA-HDs. What software is not?

does fdisk sees it?

sudo fdisk -l

should probably show no partition tables, but still show the drives.

What about parted?

What about gparted?

Where are no HDs detected ?

I fear I need more information in order to be able to give any advise.

Thanks for the help so far!
I found the solution! In the Bios it has to be switched from IDE to RAID; but before some drivers have to be installed, for otherwise Windows won't start. I tried it it works fine and is easy to do.
For others with the same problem: To come in the Bios, start the PC and push short but repetedly the DEL Button (Entf in German) until you are in BIOS.
Follow step by step the instructions given under:

Thanks txwikinger for your support!
