Did you install the server version or the desktop server?

Is this a new installation that never worked so far, or a system that worked well in the past?

In that command line mode you can do everything what you can do in a terminal window, except starting graphical programs. And there is no easy way to copy/paste from that or into that mode.
Log in by providing your username and password.
Then issue the following commands:
ping -c 3 8.8.8.8
What results do you get, 0% loss or 100% loss?
ping -c archives.ubuntu.com
Again, 0% loss or 100% loss?
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Do you get error messages?
Remark: for shutting down the system in that mode issue the command
sudo shutdown now

Can you boot into an older kernel (by selecting advanced options in the grub menu)?

I left the program with pushing the powerkey. when I started again I got the well known ivemetd and then followed the failure notice and then several commands finally starting show Plymouth boot screen and that was it. After that nothing plain screen.
when pressing in time the f 2 key I get the Aptio set up utility which I left with exit. I have no idea how to address an older kernel and how to boot with that.

You should not kill the system by pressing the power key, but use the shutdown command as given earlier.
You get the choice for an older kernel by pressing the shift key during boot to activate the grub menu.

the shift does not work
could the 16.04 DVD help?
in the end plain screen without any command line

You have to experiment a bit with timing for pressing the shift key.
Try pressing it earlier during the boot process, or later, or hitting it repeatedly.
And yes, there is another possibility to try repairing the system by booting an installer DVD and then chroot-ing into thesystem installed on the hard disk.

I finally got the grub menu and chose the recovery of an older kernel. followed by lots and lots of commands and then a blanc screen.
Therefore I guess it is better to use the installer DVVD. there I need your hand step by step. what is chrooting into the system installed?

Can you provide the gist of some of the messages shown during boot, or is it scrolling so fast that you cannot read anything?
Can you try selecting recovery mode - root command prompt from the grub menu, and what do you get as result?

Those messages do not give any indication about the root cause of your problem..
Maybe a different approach using a live system will be better.
Do you have an installation DVD or bootable USB-Stick with an Ubuntu installer on it?
Boot the computer from this medium and select the "Try Ubuntu without installing" mode.
As a first step I recommend that you do full file system checks on your Ubuntu partitions.

I acannot start the disc. I could hear it starts again and again and finally shuts down.
Perhaps the red lines in the report help to get the system started
sysem-modules-
system -udevfd[253] invalid key/value pair in file /lib/udev/
sytem-rfkill[
systemöö-fsck(388): fsck failed with error jcode 4.
system[1]:failed to start file system check on /dev/disjc/
If the device is not operating will the system on a stick help? how to get the disc on a stick?

This seems to be the important hint:
"failed to start file system check on /dev/disc/
Apparently there is a problem on one of your file systems that prevents the correct start of the OS.
Boot a live system from an Ubuntu installer and perform a full file system check on your Ubuntu partitions.

I have only the dvd 16.04 I have no idea if there is an installer on it. Anyhow the DVD player is not working. It tries to start several times and then shuts down. would it be possible to start from a stick? How do I get 16.04 installer on a stick?

The 16.04 DVD contains the installer. But of your optical drive does not work, then this seems not to be an option.
In question https:/
I suggest that you create an USB stick with an Ubuntu installer.
You need an USB stick with minimum 2GB size
Download the 16.04.1 amd64 iso file from http://
and create a bootable USB stick with the instructions on the bottom part of https:/
Depending on what systems you have available, you can create the bootable USB stick on Ubuntu https:/

Use the instructions in https:/

I got a message start up disk creator wurde unerwarted beendet, but the stick loaded the installer. then I clicked on installing and on the next step I saw that the complete hard disk would be erased. I didnt think of it before. and tried to rescue the data. by using home I could dgo back to the data and stored the pictures on the DVD file but then I didnt know how to burn. there was no key to click to start burning. perhaps there is a chance to rescue some other data.
many thanks that the computer is obviously working again.

Wait a second before you start overwriting the whole hard disk!
You better start by using the installer USB stick in the "Try Ubuntu without installing" mode first.
In this mode you can examine you hard disk, copy the files to other backup media etc.
You also have the chance to look in the /var/log/ directory on the hard disk whether you find any reason for the boot failures.

thanks for your immediate answer. yes i tried first and everything seemed ok but I did not think of my data, so I clicked installing and durting the process I was warned that the hard will be erased. At this moment I stoped and tried to save the data. I could no longer click the data box on the side . when I opened for instance pictures it was empty but when i went by computer, home, siegfried I could open all the data I could put them on a DVD afile but found no way to burn the DVD.
The message start up disk creator wurde unerwarted beendet, was from the hp computer that produced the Ubunu installer. with it I could finally start the ASUS computer where I have no the problem of saving the data.

I apologize, in the message were some errors. I just write it again:
yes i tried first and everything seemed ok but I did not think of my data, so I clicked installing and during the process I was warned that the hard disc will be erased. At this moment I stopped and tried to save the data. when I tried to open in the data box in the sidebar pictures there were no pictures and the same result for the other fields. but when i went by computer, home, siegfried I could open all the data, I could put them on a DVD file but found no way to burn the DVD.
The message start up disk creator wurde unerwarted beendet (was finished unexpectedly) , was from the hp computer that produced the Ubunu installer. with it I could finally start the ASUS computer where I have now the big problems of saving the data.
I apologize my stupid behaviour and I hope you can help me.
