Minimize System Processes

Asked by jbob0124

How can I minimize the system startup/processes, so that only the minimal will start upon start-up or restart? I am running Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy). When the computer is booted up, it runs pretty slow, but If I disable most of the processes after it has booted then it runs pretty smooth.

I guess what I really need to know is when I pull up the system monitor, what MUST be running in order for Ubuntu to operate normally?

Hi, jbob
Surely necessities for Ubuntu to run normally are entirely dependent on individual hardware and application choices?

Ubuntu allows for generalised start up trimming though, at System/Preferences/Sessions and System/Administration/Services

Hope that helps

I have minimized the "Sessions" settings to the Network Manager only which doesn't seem to help much. However on the "Services" settings, it won't allow me to select or de-select anything.

Did you select the [unlock] box in services, and enter your password?

I don't know if they have that. When I go to preferences, there is no Sessions and System, all there is is System?

ABomb, the unlock and password is needed to alter settings in System/Administration/Services.
