how to disable ACPI and enable APM on ubuntu 8.04

Asked by Dines683

I think the summary says it all but anyway

I think i have disable ACPI by adding the "acpi=off noacpi" in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.. but i am not sure how to enable APM.

Any one knows?

noapic is the correct spelling
My understanding is that you don't want to include that in your menu.lst

acpi and apic are different and are referenced here

That is correct, ACPI is newer than APM
From this article, APM is configured in the BIOS (See the "Overview" section of this link)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Configuration_and_Power_Interface

So, I'm thinking you set acpi=off and you should be sorted.
It would be worth checking in the BIOS for any power related settings that are available to be configured in there.

Do anyone of you know any if the downsides of using APM instead of ACPI?

I seem to recall something like that "the disadvantage of APM is that the BIOS functions and manages the power without any real understanding of the operating system".

But what does that actually mean for my laptop?
