Shutdown and restart missing

Asked by Hussam

At a certain point in time the power off and restart buttons disappeared form the shutdown menu. Don't know when or how. Only buttons left are log off, switch user, lock screen and hibernate. How do I get those back? Pressing the power off button does'n do the job. It will be very nice to have them back.

Hi there.
Please verify this:
go to Menu: System -> Administration -> Login Window

In the first tab "Local" of "Login Window Preferences", check if "Menu Bar: Show Actions menu" is selected.
If no, check it and close the form. If that was the problem it should appear again.

Other cause of this can be the use of beryl+XGL (as happened to myself).

Here is the solution (you've to add some lines to the startxgl script):
http://www.ubuntux.org/lost-shutdown-option-in-exit-menu

kutta: Maybe you're missing a Display Manager, try installing "gdm" (sudo apt-get install gdm). That's for the "no gui option during login".

For the other problem, check with Mariano Mara's solution or mine.
