Asked by Benjamin

Is there anyway to tell Ubuntu when a program is out of date and a new version is available?

Yes, Benjamin.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/PackagingOverview

If that doesn't apply, please read on.

Updating repositories is way too technical for me, as it seems to be for you. However what we can do is go to System/Administration/Hardware Testing and give developers a better idea of what hardware they're dealing with, and also go to System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager/Settings/Repositories/Statistics to give developers a better idea of which packages deserve the most attention.

Often though, developers release packages for Ubuntu before the Ubuntu team has had a chance to check the new release for bugs and conflicts. If you want to risk that route, Google/SourceForge is your friend.

If you want to see a change in Ubuntu methodology, there is a place for that too. Its at:- http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/

Hope That Helps

I wish there was a more direct way to tell the Ubuntu team that packages have been updated (ex: freemind, pidgin) but if this will help the progress (statistics) that'll do.

Thanks
