thousands of SQASHFS errors on trying to install

Asked by David Cusack on 2008-08-28

On the back of the sleeve of the Ubuntu installation disk there is a small print message which says "This desktop edition will not run on Intel x86 based systems (including Intel Pentium, Intel Core and AMD Athlon". My system is an HP DX2000 MT (Pk010pa) with an Intel Pentium 4 HT, at 3000 MHZ and with 80g of mem. On trying to install Ubuntu, after a few what seem like normal activities, I then started to get thousands of "SQUASHFS errors": "unable to read page, block 1EABa615, size B5AD" and "SB_Bread failed reading block 0X7AB16. These went on for 25 minutes and I couldn't stop them, so I had to turn the Computer off. All I want to do is to install Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows. I attempted to do this using the "Install inside Windows". Am I doing something wrong? or is the problem elsewhere?
Thanks,
David DJC

It looks like you got the wrong version of Ubuntu. Your machine IS an Intel x86 system.

I would recommend to download the right version, burn it in a CD and install from there. the links you can use are:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

(if you want to download from de main servers), or

http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

(if you want to download using Ares/eMule or other torrent programs. This is prefferable)

Angela, Thank's very much.
That helped a lot, and when I checked through my computers specifications, I found what you were talking about.
Being a computer driver, and not a computer expert, I don't really understand all the technical details, but that's nor so important.
As the download is over 600megs, it's easier to get the CD sent out from Ubuntu.
However, the application form for the CD has no way for me to inform Ubuntu that I need the particular version you recommended, (ie: 8.04/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso.)
So, if it's not too much trouble, could you advise me what I should do.
Once again, thank you for your great advice.
David

Hi, David. It's Angel, by the way.

Ok. I guess you requested the free CD, and in the form, you selected the second of these options:

I would like:
    Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition (64-bit)

And you should have selected the first one (32 bit processors are also known as i386 or x86).

Good luck!

Thanks once again Angela, I'll apply for the correct cd now.
