Easiest dual-boot option?

Asked by jason

Hello there,

I am about to install Ubuntu on one of my PCs at home.
It is currently using Windows Me which I want to keep.

So I need to set the system up as a dual-boot, my question is would it be simpler to run a dual-boot setup
from two hard disk drives, or from two partitions on one hard drive?

Thanks,
Jason

There's really not much of a difference in those two options to be honest.

There is another option however...
If you put even Windows98 on the machine instead of Windows Me, you could use "wubi" and install Ubuntu just like a windows application within the same partition as Windows. (Just stick the Ubuntu Hardy liveCD in while in Windows 98, 2000 or XP).

I presume you have a reason for keeping Windows Me?
It is considered to be one of the weakest releases of Windows so an upgrade of that would be of benefit to you.

Perhaps after using Ubuntu for a while you may be tempted to remove Windows altogether. :)

The only reason I'm keeping it is because occasionally it gets used by my daughter to play older PC games which can sometimes be a problem on her XP install. Otherwise you wouldn't see it for dust ;)

Windows Me is just Windows 98 in a party frock so I should be able to run any 98 apps with it.
Is that "wubi" included on the Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS Desktop Edition disk?
If I run it inside Windows will it still install Linux drivers for the hardware?

Further down the track you could investigate running those old games under "wine" in Ubuntu. It allows Windows applications to be run within linux.

For now, you can run "wubi" off "the Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS Desktop Edition disk" and it will install a full Ubuntu with the necessary Linux drivers for your hardware.
