Problema con modem usb

ho installato Ubuntu 8.04.1 da qualche giorno e sto cercando di collegare il mio modem usb a Internet.
Il modem ha un chipset Conexant e ho letto le varie guide.
Dopo avere copiato il file cxacru-fw.bin nella cartella del firmware ho provato ad eseguire il comando
cat /proc/net/atm/cxacru\:0
ma mi viene riportato il seguente messaggio:
ADSL USB MODEM (usb-0000:00:1d.2-1)
MAC: 00:30:0a:15:58:0e
AAL5: tx 0 ( 0 err ), rx 0 ( 0 err, 0 drop )
Line state unknown
Cosa può essere secondo voi?

Prova un po' questo

Ubuntu Modem conexant

Scaricare il pacchetto deb da http://linux.dell.com/files/ubuntu/hardy/modem-drivers/hsf/
installare i pacchetti vedere se il modem appare nei restricted drivers

Poi vedere l'howto in http://forum.ubuntu-it.org/index.php/topic,110077.0.html
