Boot hangs after "Loading, please wait..." for way too long

Asked by Collin Stocks

After the lines:

Starting up ...
Loading, please wait...

my computer hangs for a good ten or so seconds before printing anything about attempting to resume from swap. During this time, no IO happens at all on the disk, as the hard drive light doesn't come on.

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Pentium M 32 bit processor, 1.60GHz

Other than this, the rest of the boot sequence is very very fast. Anyone know how to fix this? I already tried reformatting my swap partition, but that didn't do anything. I fsck the hard drive and it passed without changing anything.

Can you install bootchart and check the chart to see if it shows what's hanging?

I have attached my bootchart to this page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BootCharting

It is next to my username, CollinStocks.

Seems to me as though it is hanging for way too long at the beginning with no CPU being used and no read/writes to the disk... the resume process also doesn't seem to be doing anything for the five or so seconds it runs, and udevd seems idle during that time period, as well...

What to do, what to do...

Open a terminal and write:

dmesg

Search the log for errors, please.

Your boot don't have errors, probably is the memory ram check and you have 1Ghz, I think this very normal.

I'm not sure if it is...

I actually timed the boot using a physical timer, and the boot takes about twenty seconds longer than bootchart reports. This means that something is going on before bootchart is loaded which is causing the hang.

Also, although there have been hangs of about three seconds in previous versions of ubuntu, none has ever been anywhere near this long.

Perhaps something is configured incorrectly, or something became corrupt? It's not as though I reboot often, so I suppose I can wait until Intrepid before doing a clean install, but I would like to know if there is anything actually wrong that I can fix.

I think I know what might have caused the problem initially, though not at all how to fix it.

A little while ago, my hard drive decided to sometimes stop working, so I got Dell to replace it. I won't go into the details of how I did this, but I essentially made a verbatim copy of the old device onto the new device since they were the same size media.

Anyway, it seemed to work, as it booted and passed fsck when I forced it to check the new disk. All the partitions were exactly the same; all my settings and files were perfect: my computer seemed not to notice that anything had changed.

Except now it hangs for way too long at boot. Any suggestions? Should I do a clean install of the operating system? Should I reinstall grub? Any ideas?

I did a clean install of my operating system, and that seems to have worked.

Grrr... Launchpad wouldn't let me declare this problem solved before, so I have to post another message in order to do so.

Just in case someone else will come over here, and might not want to re-install the system:

This issue can sometimes be caused by change in either UUID or in the location of the /dev/sda3 (or whatever the case may be). Since your drive has been replaced, I suspect that this is the case.

Hence, the /etc/fstab file stated a wrong UUID / device for a certain partition (probably the swap), and this caused the boot to hang.

The way to check the UUID number for the device /dev/sda3 is:

sudo vol_id /dev/sda3

Have the greatest day!

Thanks for your feedback, but I had already checked the UUID numbers in fstab. That was one of the things I did when reformatting my swap as suggested by one of the replies to my question.

By the way, Intrepid boots _much_ faster than Hardy did, though I rarely reboot anyway, and boot time is by no means a game-changer. Until I upgraded to Intrepid (clean install), I hadn't rebooted for 33 days, 14 hours and 37 minutes.
