I can't connect to the Internet.

Asked by worwizard

I have a HP/Compaq laptop and I can't connect to the Internet. I can connect in XP by installing the HP drivers (EXE files). I can't install the drivers in Ubuntu. How do I connect to the Internet using the Wireless Network Connection?

System > Administration > Network 'Unlock' (put in password)

Use the Properties section on the wireless card to configure the connection (ie WEP, WPA, ect) it should see your network in range!

Hope this helps

Oh. I'm sorry... I did not tell you that the light for the Network Adapter is not on. I turned it on, but it can't see that the Network Adapter is there. It did the same thing in XP before I installed the drivers. I don't think HP made drivers for Ubuntu.

so after you turned it on, does ifconfig show something new? (ie wifi0) ?

If not, check dmesg:

dmesg |grep wifi*

I really don't understand what that is. I'm new to Ubuntu...
Here's a question...
I installed Ubuntu under Windows XP. How do I access it in XP?
You see... I think I can connect to the Internet with Ubuntu after I open Ubuntu under XP. Do you know what I'm talking about?

It's a dual boot sequence, to access Ubuntu - you'll need to reboot and select it from the list to boot into Ubuntu. It's not a live environment. However - you might find it easier to just install Virtual PC on XP and create an Ubuntu Virtual Machine. You're almost certain to have a working NIC at that point.

I'm just going to download Microsoft Virtual PC. I may need help getting it to work, but that's a different help page on a different web site.
Thank you for your help.
