Evolution sending bulk mail limitation?

Asked by Stephen Toney

We have a mailing list of about 300 clients. I added all their names to the BCC field of an email and sent it (with my name as the "To"). I got a dialog box that extended beyond the top and bottom of my display, showing some of the addresses I was sending to, each on one line. There was no way to scroll this box, so I don't know what it was trying to tell me. I could see no message, button or other control except the addresses. I pressed Enter and the email was sent, but I suspect not to all 300 names, since some people got it and others didn't.

There are several problems here:
1. This dialog is broken!
2. Is there a limit to the number of addressees?
3. Why didn't everyone get the email?
4. Is there a better way to handle this? I'd prefer to have each person get their own email, instead of one addressed to me.

Many thanks in advance!
Stephen

Hello Stephen,

As far as I am aware, there is not a limit on the number of email addresses sent through Evolution though I have never tried to email that many people through Evolution.

As far as the dialog, you might want to create a bug report so that the developers see it.

In my opinion with that many people on your list, I would use a system that is designed for it. Two good examples would be:
http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/
and
http://www.phplist.com/

I just set up phplist not to long ago and I must say it is set up pretty nicely.
Another added bonus is that if you have a webhost, you can access it from any computer with internet access and it also automates a lot of the process of adding and removing people.

Best Regards,

Hi William,

Many thanks for the reply. In doing further testing with fewer
addressees I discovered that the dialog is only asking me to confirm
that the addressees can receive HTML mail. Pretty lame -- there's no
reason to list all the names in a dialog like that! I submitted it as a
bug -- thanks for the link, which made it easy to do.

We don't run our own webserver, except for testing, so I can't use
PHPmail, although it looks just like what we need. We are planning to
install a Ubuntu/Apache server soon, so I'll definitely keep it
bookmarked. Meanwhile I have to find a solution that can run on an
Ubuntu or Windows desktop or on our shared host.

Thanks again for the information!

Best wishes,
Stephen

You can also disable the checking in the Evolution preferences.

You also should check with your email provider if you continue to have problems as they may limit it to sending about 50 emails per hour or so. Some have no limit at all, though it is something to check into.
