nvidia Dual Monitor setup destroyed after software upgrade

Asked by JDRifleman

I have an Nvidia Quadro NVS 285 video card with a dual monitor output. I am currently running Ubuntu 7.10. After much struggle, I managed to get the dual monitors up and running with twinview and Xinorama for about a month now. With everything running exactly as it should, I accepted the most recent software upgrade from the manager when prompted. (08/25/08)

It asked me to reboot, so I did. Upon reboot, ubuntu had to load in low graphics mode, and my nvidia drivers do not seem to be being used. I attempted to reinstall the nvidia graphics drivers via the nvidia site, but it explained that I already had the latest version. I also attempted to install the drivers via Envy, which seemed to complete successfully. However nothing is changed.

I'm a noob, but it sounds like my problem resides in my xorg.conf file. But why would the software upgrade change that? If anyone knows what is going on it would be of great help. I have no idea where to go from here.

Apparently, it was the nvidia driver files that were altered when completing a software upgrade. This is perplexing. However, upon redownloading and reinstalling the nvidia drivers via the nvidia website, Ubuntu booted as if nothing wrong ever happened.

I guess I am half satisfied. However, I'll be watching closely on all the following updates to make sure my system doesnt destroy itself again.
