Ubuntu 8.04 boot up too slow... more than 2 min...to get an active desktop

Asked by Pushpinder Singh

I have a Toshiba L30 laptop 1.60Ghz Celeron 1GB RAM. Using Ubuntu since last year 7.10... installed 8.04 using since 3 months... solved the problem of no sound on 7.10.. very happy.

The 7.10 used to boot up within 40sec ... to a working desktop. After installing Ubuntu 8.04 the boot up time increased to more than 1 min till login screen and another 30+ seconds to get to desktop.

I checked the DMESG and found two long stops of 10sec and 15sec at the following points

Wait of 10 seconds at:

[19.581338] EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
[29.806298] ip_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team

Wait of 15seconds at:

[ 55.737116] hda-intel: Invalid position buffer, using LPIB read method instead.
[ 70.551648] NET: Registered protocol family 10

Is there any way to speed up the two processes mentioned above?
Will it help if I reinstall 8.04 with xfs filesystem as now I have ext-3 as fs.

I have tried the relevant tweaks mentioned in

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Optimize-Ubuntu-8-04-for-Speed-86405.shtml

Still no discernible benefits... just managed to shave off about 6 seconds. Still 54 sec + 30 sec.

Windows XP boots up in less than 30sec. Even while running in my Virtual box XP is up and running in less than 30 sec.
