I have 223 MB on RAM. Can I install Ubuntu 8.04 with desktop using the Alternative Disc anyway?

Asked by Neo Adonis

My computer have 223 MB on RAM. The manual says that I can install Ubuntu 8.04.1 with desktop because the minimum requeriments are 64 MB, but the page says the minimum is 256 MB. So, can I install Ubuntu 8.04 with desktop using the Alternative Disc? I did it using Wubi but it didn't work (the installation was stuck in 14% more o less).

I recommend you install Xubuntu, it is made for PC's with lower specs, as otherwise, Ubuntu may be quite slow on your computer. It is an official derivative (ie. supported by Canonical) so don't worry about it.

Xubuntu available here - http://www.xubuntu.org/

I installed a previous version on a computer with 128 MB, but it was slow. At least far snappier than XP.

Current version may be installed using alternate CD

I still recommend Xubuntu, it will be a lot faster than Ubuntu, but it is your choice.

Hi,
8.04 needs 384MB quote from -> Recommended minimum requirements
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
quote:
The minimum requirements are only likely to allow a server (non-graphical) installation to run well. The recommended minimum requirements should allow you to run a graphical installation of Ubuntu well.

Which manual did you read?

OK. The manual I read was for the Ubuntu Alternative Disc AMD64 (due I cannot use the Desktop CD). That manual says the minimum requeriments (with desktop) are 64 MB in RAM. But, considering the last comments, I have a new question. What is better, use XP in my PC or Ubuntu?

OK. Xubuntu is a good idea. In fact, I can use it. But anyway I want to know if Ubuntu is faster than XP in a PC with 223 MB. And I want to know if Ubuntu can be installed, at least using the alternative disc for AMD64.

Ah okay, well that I don't know, maybe someone else can shed some light on this?

OK. I think I'm going to install Ubuntu, but later install on it Xcfe interface. Or use Xubuntu in my PC (like rugby471 said lots of times, thanks ;) ).
