downloaded printer driver, opened and installed, still doesn't see it in the choices

Asked by matt tomorsky

recently installed ubuntu, was able to get most everything working on my own but can't seem to get the printer working. went to system-admin-printer and followed the prompts. it found the printer, but the driver was not listed. went to brother [model mfc5440cn] and downloaded driver and opened on the desktop. is is installed apparently, and i have restarted, but it still doesn't show up anywhere and i am probably a good suggestion from putting 2 and 2 together. any ideas?

Open Synaptic (System menu, Administration) and search for "brother".
Click on each and read the description to see which supports your printer.

Then click to install it and then go to the System menu, Administration, Printing to configure the printer.

hi tony,
once in synaptic, it shows a green box that both the lpr and cupswrapper are installed. after restart, when configuring the printer [which it sees] and after clicking on brother, it still does not show it in the choices. the other option to select 'provide ppd file' i can't locate the proper files. i guess i am at a stand still. thanks for answering, hopefully we will get this straightened out.

Ok, open a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories) and type

sudo apt-get install brother-cups-wrapper-extra

Then try the Printing option in the Administration menu again.
