Can't shut down ubuntu

When i click quit only the gnome-panels disappear. And then i can't to any thing?

Please help me

System: Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit on Dell Precision 360

try to shutdown the computer and after check the /var/syslog if are any error

Hi Abhinav,
please check in system -> system administration -> login window -> locale -> menu bar if "show actions menu" is activated with a checkmark.
