usb flash memory problem

Asked by Xpatnat

Non-geek-newbie working with Ubuntu 8.04-Gnome

My Usb flash were working good on ubuntu so far and all of the sudden I got the following message :

error while copying file into /media/disk

then the mouse freezes for about 5 minutes and when It becomes active again by clicking on "more details" It displays :

error writing to file: input/output error

At this point everything freezes, I cannot close the windows or unmount and I need to reboot (by pressing in/out switch).

BTW what is the equivalent of ctrl+alt+del or esc since those don't work when it's frozen?

Any input (plain English please) would be welcome?

Thanks :-)

Then make login with your user and passwrod.

OR ( if the instructions at step 1 doesn't works )

Press CTRL+ALT+F2 keyboard key to switch to a virtual console terminal, make login with your user and password.

open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Are you pc in dual boot mode Ubuntu+Windows...?
If yes please simply boot form Windows and perform a complete file system check of your usb flash memory from Windows and be sure to umount the usb device before remove it.
You can also try to format your usb flash memory from Windows or from Ubuntu ( i think you must choose fat32 filesystem format)

And retry with Ubuntu.

Hope this helps
