Ubuntu not working

Asked by Billie

I installed Ubuntu 8.0.4 on a hard drive by itself, the installation went fine and it boots. I put in my user name and password and after it logs in it just sets there with a brown screen. Neither the mouse or the keyboard works. I want to run and mess with Ubuntu any help would be greatly appreciated. I downloaded the recent version and made a boot disk and installed it that way.

Hi Billie
Seems like a gnome related problem. I guess the keyboard is working correctly as you managed to login. Could you try to switch to a text-console with STRG-ALT-F2 and login there. If this is successful type "sudo killall gdm" and press ENTER (without the Quotes) it will ask for your password, type it in (it will only kill the gnome display manager gdm) and then "sudo gdm" and gdm will restart. Login again. If this works, report back that we can find a definitive solution. If not switch back to the console (STRG-ALT-F2) and look if there are any error-messages, what do they say?

Further: If you type "sudo startx" after "sudo killall gdm", can you see/move the mouse pointer?

Do you have a multihead graphic card (with more than one output) or even two graphic-cards/chips (onboard and card)?

I tried the (STRG-alt-F2 at the Ubuntu screen and it scrolled somethings that it was loading on the screen. It came to the brown screen with the login box. I logged in and it went back to the brown screen and it done nothing. The keyboard only works during the login and password screens. I have an older video card it only has one output but the computer does have onboard video.

I started a new session and choose fail safe and it booted up with no problem. Any idea how to install the wireless driver for my wireless adapter? It said to install ngistk file but where do I get it from? Any help would be appreciated.

can you specify the name of the driver ?
you can also use ndiswrapper from the repositories to use the windows drivers for your adapter.
