sound works in only one application at a time

Asked by yellowmango

If I play a movie in VLC player, then I cannot listen to any music through pandora on firefox after that until I reboot the computer. Quitting VLC alone is not enough to restore sound to pandora. The reverse is also true. If I listen to any music on pandora, then I cannot hear the sounds in any movie that I play in VLC, even after I quit firefox. Is there a quick and easy fix to this?

Not really. The problem relies in the move from ALSA to the PulseAudio infrastructure in Hardy. So for now you will have to stick to updates and hope for the best.

I have noticed that once in a while firefox still runs in the background even after you have closed it. Do the following:

1. Go to Administration -> System Monitor -> Processes
2. See if there is a process called firefox run it, if there is kill it (right click and Kill Process)

That should fix the flash plug-in issue. It'æs neither VLCs, firefox or even flashs bug, it is a pulse audio bug.

Hope this helps somehow.

Rubén.

Please also try to be sure your system is fully upgraded, to check:
open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all
sud apt-get autoremove

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps
