I translate it from italian, in short:

Download the firmware from http://www.openlinux.eu/download/gizmo/cxacru-fw.bin
and save it on a floppy or on a usb pen or ( if you have installed Ubuntu in dual boot win+Linux) save it on the win partition, i suggest to create a C:\modem\ directory and put the file into that dir.

Please unplug your Edimax 7024um adsl modem from the USB port.

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo -i

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then you must copy the cxacru-fw.bin to the /lib/firmware/ so type:

cd /lib/firmware/

cp /path/to/your/firmware/cxacru-fw.bin .

Plug the modem cable to usb port and configure it using usual tool to configure modem.

I suggest to check into the menu System->Administration->hardware driver if there are some new driver in it.
Then, please try i'm not so sure, to go to System->Administration->Network to configure your modem with ppp.

Hope this helps
