cannot open desktop icons on ubuntu

Any desktop icon that I generate on Ubuntu 8.04, by drag and drop fails to open when clicked.
I get the following message:-

There was an error installing the selected file.
"my account" does not appear to be a valid theme"

What can I do?

I'm not sure if this is it, but you may want to check where you downloaded it from and make sure that it is meant to be installed by drag-and-drop. You might want to extract it first and then move it to your ~/.themes/ directory.
