Can't play DVD

Asked by MadhuSoodanan

I can't use DVD

-- INSTALLATION
Installing the software on Linux:

Pre-requisites: if you want the installer to launch in graphic mode, you
need libgtk1.2. Otherwise, the installer will fall back to starting on a
terminal.

To install the application, open the CD-ROM in a file browser or via the
command-line, navigate to the 'linux' directory and launch the 'setup.sh'.
Nautilus might ask you if you want to execute the file on a terminal, or simply
execute it. It is not necessary to start it on a terminal.

Depending on your distribution, the CD-ROM might be mounted as 'noexec' -
meaning that no program may be executed directly from the CD-ROM. This is meant
as a security. Unfortunately, this will also prevent the installation program
from being launched. Short of modifying this behaviour (please refer to the
documentation of your distribution for further explanations), you should execute
the following:

- copy the 'linux' and 'ldoce5.data' folders on your hard drive (for instance
  in the '/tmp' directory)
- navigate to the 'linux' directory you just copied and set the executable
  permission on 'setup.sh'
- launch 'setup.sh' (see above)

=======================================================================
I copied the 2 folders in /tmp

Found setup.sh in /tmp

After that I couldn't do anything.

I'd suggest you install in the terminal. If you run:

sudo mount -o remount,exec /dev/sr0

The you can use the terminal to navigate into the DVD mount point and run the installer.

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

Actually I had tried to right click on some folders and verified the permission and gave permission. But that didn't work. I couldn't play such a DVD in my life using Ubuntu. But I could play an ordinary DVD CD using VLC or SMPlayer.

You have to differentiate between playing music from a CD/DVD with media players like VLC, and installing and/or using software from a data disc.

A DVD is a read-only medium. You cannot change permissions on it.
You only have the possibilities to
1. copy the files (in this case 'linux' and 'ldoce5.data' folders) to the hard disk and set the required permissions there or
2. mount the DVD in a way that all files are executable (as already recommended by actionparsnip).

What is the output of
ls -l /media/madhu/LDOCE5

Got a file on the Desktop

Appeared with a warning sign when I tried to open it:

The application launcher “ldoce5.desktop” has not been marked as trusted. If you do not know the source of this file, launching it may be unsafe.

I Don't know anything about it. Don't know the application to open with.

"I Don't know anything about it"

This is the application that you just installed. Why did you install it if you did not know what it is about?

It is a gift I got along with a Yearbook of a reliable source. (Yearbook is reliable. Not about the CD) Now I don't wish to use it if it is unsafe. There was no information about its safety. If so is there a shortcut to uninstall it?

Revision history for this message
MadhuSoodanan (mt-madhu) said :

To open it I must right-click and give permission to execute it, isn't it? I am waiting for a reply to #20

The warning "The application ... has not been marked as trusted. If you do not know the source of this file, launching it may be unsafe." is a standard message displayed for everything that does not come from the Ubuntu repositories.
If you trust the provider of the DVD, then you can start the application without further doubts.

I do not know anything about that software, so I do not have any knowledge how to uninstall it.
Is there some kind of uninstall.sh on the DVD, or anything in one of the README files?

I didn't give permission (as given in #22). So I couldn't open it. Is it the right way to do that? Couldn't see any uninstall.sh. in the folders. Searched for LDOCE5 in Synaptic, but didn't see it there.

What do you now want?

If you want to use the software, you should try using the desktop file.

If you want to uninstall the software again, you should try the uninstall script, and hopefully this will uninstall the software.

This is foreign software, not provided by Ubuntu. So we can only provide very limited help with it.
