Totem is a front-end (UI) for playing media files. As a back-end, it should either use gstreamer or xine to play the media files. The back-end is used to parse the video files (codec). In a given time, you can choose to use either xine or gstreamer as a backend for totem and not both. Each back-end has some advantages and disadvantages. IMHO, a lot of people use totem-xine. I would recommend you to install totem-xine. This process would remove totem-gstreamer and it is fine.
