system reload, external dvd rw will not automount

Asked by tombo

Hello, after I did a clean install my external DVD rw does not get detected . I did some research like lshw , lsusb , dmesg and vi /etc/fstab . It looks to me that my internal dvd rom is recognized as a usb device , if thats possible . I'm still a newbie so i'm not really good at figuring all this stuff out . also there is a message that driver "sr" needs to be updated . I'm running hardy 8.04 also with kde desktop . my printer is hooked up to the same usb hub so that isn't the problem . Please Help ! I've include some out put please let me know if you need more . ThankYou!! Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods

Please be sure your Ubuntu 8.04.1 is fully updated and upgraded, please do this check from terminal.

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all

then to reboot your pc, type:

sudo reboot

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then retry

Hope this helps

Plase open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal.

Please plug the usb flash drive.

then type, into terminal:
dmesg
to see error or warming messages...

May be your device cannot be mounted because filesystem is marked not clearly unmounted and it have some errors.

Please do a filesystem check on that drive. (from win)

Thank you

Please try (assuming your windows fat32 partition is on /dev/sdd1)

sudo dosfsck -ar /dev/sdd1

Choose to make the original the backup (option 1 I think), and then choose "Y".

hope this helps
