renaming computer

Is it possible to rename my computer (the name would be the part immediately after the @ in a terminal) without reinstalling ubuntu etc. ?

yes you can change the computer name:

Open System ▸ Administration ▸ Network.

Press Unlock and enter your password in the Password for (username): field.

Press the Authenticate button.

Click the General tab. Enter the name of the computer in the Host name field.

Restart the computer for the change to take effect.
