Enhancement proposal bug:DSL via pppoe configuration on installation

Asked by Michael Dewes

In the process of installation ubuntu is trying to configure network via dhcp. For people using only a dsl modem without router that point is already a problem, something which urges them to look up the web, search the ubuntu forums they might not even know by that time and generally might keep them off using ubuntu as a desktop for their everyday tasks.
Would it be possible to integrate pppoeconf more neatly into the installation process, say if dhcp don't lead to any usable result? Would it furthermore be possible to add some pon/poff buttons to the taskbar in case a direct modem was detected while installing? I'm not sure about how networking is done in all of your countries, but here in germany there's lots of people with exactly that setting and they do not all use flatrates.

I agree!

I tried to install Kubuntu, but when it got to "scanning mirrors" it just hung(same) with Ubuntu Server ,because here I use a DSL modem and a Linksys router in dhcp mode.

I have 1 XP pc and one older pc running Suse 10.1 and in both cases to connect to the internet,I have to "dial out."

On Suse,I have always used Kinternet and it works perfectly.

Unfortunately,Ubuntu and its variations are fine for people with cable modems and/or static ip conenctions, for us DSL folks,it's a real problem.

It'd be nice,if it was like the Suse install, where you can set up the dsl, download the release notes to test it and if it fails, you can just finish the install and fix the internet later!
