How Can I Reduce Size Of Desktop Icons

Asked by taurus

My folder icons are set to a certain fixed size on my desktop that I'm happy with. However, when I download a .pdf or .jpeg to my desktop, the size of these icons are bigger than the rest of my desktop icons. I want all icons, regardless of whether they're folders or files, to be of the same size automatically, not matter what. I don't want to have to resize them manually. I want this to be automatic. How can I do this?

You need to install gconf-editor

Then go to Apps | nautilus | icon_view and change the thumbnail size

I use 48 instead of the default (for my screen size) of 96

It is already installed -- it is just not in your menu by default. Open a terminal and type

gconf-editor

and you will have what you need.

Thanks for this 'new technique' but although I tried gconf-editor and changed the value from 96 to 48 but it had absolutely no effect. Everything's still the same.

Did I do something incorrectly or did I miss out on a step?

Any advice is highly appreciated. BTW, I'm using ubuntu 7.10.

Many thanks for your attempt manisekaran. But the issue is not the screen resolution. In fact I have my resolution set to max (1024x768). I need the icons to scale down on this same resolution.

Apparently I think there's a BUG on Ubuntu that prevents this from resizing. The correct method to resize the icons is (apparently) through gconf-editor and when I changed the value from 96 to 48, nothing happened.

Now, when I removed the word "standard" from the setting "default_zoom_level", all icons just shrunk and the text with them disappeared. Then I put the word "standard" back in the "default_zoom_level" and NOW the icons look a LITTLE smaller. So I think this IS a bug on Ubuntu and I've reported this.

BTW, my machine is a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop, 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB HDD, DVD combom, 15" LCD + external optical mouse (IBM) and external A4Tech keyboard + headset.

I just mentioned it to note in case hardware has something to do with it.

Thanks for your inputs.
Khalid

This is an old thread, but then this is how I fixed it:

1. Applications--Terminal
2. Type gconf-editor
3. Apllications--Nautilus--Preferences-desktop_font (reduce this font to abt 8.5)
4. Apllications--Nautilus--icon_view--default_zoom_level (change to small, you may try smaller too)
5. Right Click on desktop---Tick Keep Aligned.

You may tweak a little but it works and looks neater.
