No sound with ALSA

Asked by Luiz Henrique

The onboard sound of my ASUS K8U-X is not working. ALSA can't find it in Breezy, and don't find it in Dapper too. Back on Hoary, it worked all right.

My onboard sound is:
The ALi M5455 chipset Ac'97 controller with an Analog Digital AD1888 chip.

It only works (poorly) with the module ali5455 (which doesn't exist in Dapper), but - again - not with ALSA: works with OSS. The sound output is kinda strange: the sound comes from the microphone jack.

Alsa has an option somewhere to flip which channel the sound is coming out of. Do you have the gnome volume control applet? If not right click on your panel and click on Add To Panel. Search for "Vol" it should be obvious which one to add. Once you have the sound icon on your panel. Right click it and go to Open Volume Controls. Look underswitches. Good luck
