Can I use Ubuntu on my Averatec laptop

Asked by Louise

Hello am about to venture out into Ubuntu world and leave Windows behind. I am a beginner and have an Averatec AV 3250- HX laptop with Mobile AMD Athalon Xp-M 2200 processor, it is wireless and has 512 RAM.Will I be able to install and run Ubuntu? I want to be microsoft free and figured this was a good place to start. I have been told that Linux does not require as much RAM as windows will my 512 be adequate.
Also any advice prior to doing this? Thanks Louise

You should be able to install, yes. Some machines have quirky wireless chipsets, which can make them a little troublesome to setup, but for the most part they can often be made to work with a little tweaking.

Yes, 512MB is enough to run Ubuntu. I have a laptop that has this much memory and it works fine. Obviously it depends what you plan to do with the machine as to whether 512MB is sufficient. If you are doing average user stuff like email, web, instant messaging and office documents (and to be honest a whole lot more besides) it would be just fine. if you planned to edit large audio or video, or digitally manipulate very large (multi megabyte) images then it might creak under the streain.

Here are some links you might find useful when preparing to install Ubuntu:-

Good luck, and do come back and raise new support requests as issues come up.
