could someone please point me to a treid a proven guide to move my home file to a new partition

I have found many guides but most seem to have some sort of error when one looks at the comments that follow the guides by others... so is there an official guide here somewhere.
I want to move my home file from dev/sdb5 to dev/sdb8 and any other files that may be needed to keep data so I can reinstall ubuntu and fix a boot problem I have. Thanks for advice and Good links:)

What is the boot issue that you have, you may be able to fix it by merely reinstalling the GRUB bootloader from the installation media.

i have read that it is good to keep this file separate anyway ... a new user error so to speak
