I've not come across any such issues myself, which theme/s is it you're having problems with and what exactly is the problem you're having? Maybe I can help you fix it :)

Dan Bishop, any help will be much appreciated. I'm trying to load 'Snow Apple' icon theme but with no success. I install it but the icons fail to load. And, I've never had an issue with this same icon theme before when I was using 7.10. I've even tried renaming the some of the .png icons in the folder, but that doesn't work either. The other icon theme I'm also having issues with is 'BWS icons'.

I really want 'Snow Apple' installed.

Ok, I think I've found the problem. Did you download the theme from deviant here: http://freshmeat.net/projects/snow-apple/ ?

If so, that package is broken, the icons are not set out in the correct format for a gnome theme, thankfully, someone else has already fixed it and you can download a working version from here: http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/327

I've tested that myself and it definitely does work, so if you have any more problems, let me know.

In the future, I would recommend you get icon themes from www.gnome-look.org they always seem to work fine :)

Dan, that doesn't fix the problem. I don't know what to do at this point. I've even heard that many 8.04 users have compained about the same thing, that they can't load this icon them. I'm able to load all the icons in the theme package, but the icon for the folders don't load. All that loads is just a grey old folder for folders in general. That's all.

What do you suggest now?

Ok, I see the problem now. Basically the icon theme you have chosen is VERY old and wasn't even originally for linux, but for OSX. The authors have then ported it to gnome, but a very old version of gnome and gnome no longer uses icons in the same way.

All is not lost however, I'm reworking it for you a bit now and I'll put the fixed version up on my site and send you a link once it's done.

Ok I've uploaded it to the downloads section of my site: http://www.viciouslime.co.uk/

You can find it under GTK themes :)

Ok, the solution that was handed down to me in ubuntuforums.org was to edit the index.theme file. It works flawlessly now and I can see all the icons in the theme.
