Asked by John Higgs

I have a dell xps laptop and I am trying to install Ubuntu 6.1.0 and when i install it i get to step 5 and then it gives me a blank little window ( the gnome edit partitoner?? ) it just stays scanning for disks and never resolves. The other thing i noticed is when i first click the manual choose what to be partitioned-- nothing is displayed underneath for options to resize or anything. any help is appreciated

Hello John!

What version did you download?
Alternate or desktop?
Check the integrity of the disk, maybe it didn't download or burned properly and try to make a 'default' install with the desktop cd.

I have Ubuntu 6.1.0 I'm not sure if it's alternate or desktop but I want to use it with xp pro. The integrity of the disk should be fine because my friend gave it to me and it works fine for him. (He alternates between xp pro and ubuntu) When i get to step 5 in the installation... and I click "manually set partition" my friend told me that there is nothing being displayed for options when they're should be. (such as resize and such?) I hit forward and just end up waiting forever.

Should i still try to do a default install? and if

Hi again!

Check the disc. You should use the ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso.
And answering your question: Yes. The default install works for most people.

If you want to keep windows and dual boot, then read this:

Good luck!
