ubuntu upgrade ruin audio,video,keyboard settings

Asked by AndersW on 2008-08-09

last week after a reboot of my Ubuntu-desktop installation (version xx.xx.xx.19 / 386), the videocard(NVIDIA 6600) was unknown, the audio(integrated intel stuff) didnt exist, and my keyboard layout had changed from danish to US. If I boot with another kernel (version xx.x.x.16), everything works fine. But now I dont know what to do:
I cant keep booting from an earlier image, but i guess that if I remove the later images, I will somehow break the automatic update system, or what?
By the way: I know i ran a long list of updates before i rebooted (and also installed VirtualBox), is there a tool that can show me which packages that has been installed at a given time?
Thanks in advance

Do you mean that the name of the .19 kernel is:-
2.6.24-19-i386
and not
2.6.24-19-generic
?

The exact name of the latest kernel image is
Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-386 (not i386)

The only available image with a lower version number is
Ubuntu 8.04.1, Kernel 2.6.24-16-Generic
and when I boot this image everything works

The 386 image is mainly for old PCs which cannot handle the normal kernels, so that may be the cause of your problems. Just stick to the generic kernel, that is usually the best, it is safe to remove the 386 kernel image.

Thank you, I will try that. I am still quite confused about how a kernel upgrade can ruin my sound- and video-configuration..
