mathematica fonts invisible

When I run Mathematica in the front end; the fonts are semi-invisible. How do I rectify this?

It looks similar to this bugreport -- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/214683 (there is also some solution of this problem).

Thank you for the information. However, when I applied the fix as suggested by Tom Kalvoda, it didnot work. Fonts still remain "crumbly-biscuit" type making things impossible read. To provide you with more information, my machine is a Dell Inspiron 1420 and I use Mathematica 5.2; which was installed when I had Gutsy gibbon. At that time, my mathematica front end simply just used to freeze on start-up. When I upgraded to Hardy, it began to work, but fnts are unreadable. Please suggest something.
