can't play video

Asked by Noel Marlu Agullo

I have looked for apps that can handle mp3 and many formats of video. I have found and installed mplayer and rhythmbox; I have also installed the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" following the instructions from the help page.
I tried to play an .avi file in totem and in mplayer but none worked. Rhythmbox is doing fine. I wonder if I still needed to install some plugins.

I tried playing the .avi file on the mplayer and it said " Fatal Error! error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

I tried playing the same file on Totem and it said this: "Video codec 'XviD' is not handled. You might need to install additional plugins to be able to playsome types of movies.

Need help pls. This is the last piece of my puzzle so that I can break free from Windows. Thanks.

by the way, in my mplayer, I have ALSA-0.9.x-1.x as my audio driver and X11/Xv as my video driver. Hope this helps.

I went to mplayer's preferences and went to codecs & demuxer tab. I found out that both the video and audio codec family boxes both have none. I picked XviD for my video codec family and MPEG layer-2, layer-3 for my audio codec family. Now I was able to play the .avi file, but I get a message that says "error! gnome_screensaver_control()". What does this mean?

I am already able to play various video formats. No need to answer this question. Thanks to Muhammad Zul 'Izzi M.Z for trying to help.
