Install downloaded software offline

Asked by buddhi

Hi all,

I am a Ubuntu newbie. Recently I received my Ubuntu copy. I got install it to my PC but most of the media file cannot run in the media player which Ubuntu has provided. When I double click on such a media file for an example a MP3 Ubuntu try’s to connect to the Internet to download something. I don’t have Internet connected to my PC. But I can download such supporting software from else ware and can install them offline (if it possible).

Please let me know whether I can do like that and a site to download other supporting software.

And another question; is Ubuntu automatically petition the hard drive to install it on the PC.

My Ubuntu version is 7.10

Thank you,

Buddhi

While it'd be much easier to move your PC to location with internet access for a few hours and install from there, manual downloads can be found at http://www.getdeb.net

You need the package 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' for MP3 support.

Should you mean 'partition the harddrive', Ubuntu indeed does this near automatically (guided partitioning) unless you choose different.
As an aside, just for clarification: When you want further software installed, Ubuntu needs to be installed on the harddrive, not just ran from the LiveCD.

If you can move the computer to a location with internet access for a bit, navigate to "System > Administration > Software Sources". Enable all repositories but 'proposed' and 'backports'.

Then run 'sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get autoremove totem-mozilla && sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 w32codecs ubuntu-restricted-extras flashplugin-nonfree mozilla-mplayer'

You'd be thereafter sorted for wma/wmv mp3 and DVD playback as well as flash and video web content.

Hi! It would really help if you could connect your pc to the internet, 'cause you could install everything without problems...anyway, if you can't I suggest you to try installing vlc media player, which is very good and can play almost any fiel type.
You can try installing it manually downloading the files you need from http://packages.ubuntu.com

Here's the link to the vlc package:
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/v/vlc/vlc_0.8.6.release.c-0ubuntu5.1_i386.deb
once installed put it in your ubuntu desktop or another folder you like and double click on it. However, this package, like all other packages, will have dependencies (which would be installed automaticlaay if you were connected...) that must be installe in order for the program to run. You can find the list of dependencies here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/vlc
you can install a dependency whenever the vlc installation process asks you to.
If you don't wanna download all the files on the list, you can try reading this post:
http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73538&highlight=offline
They should have a download package with all the files you need in one, I think at http://www.mediafire.com/?cd1cm13z9i2
(I think it's a list of the urls in which you'll find all tha files you need)

Try and I hope you'll manage somehow!:)

as for the other question, 'is Ubuntu automatically petition the hard drive to install it on the PC', what does this mean exactly? I didn't understand what you were asking...
